Donald Simpson is a Partner working from Turcan Connell's offices in London and Edinburgh. He advises UK and international clients on trusts, asset protection and tax planning. This includes advising on wills, powers of attorney and charitable giving. An important area of his work is inheritance tax and succession planning, notably for entrepreneurs, company directors and family business owners.
Donald is a member of Turcan Connell's international team and advises international clients resident in the UK and expats around the world on the UK tax rules and structuring their UK interests. For non-UK domiciliaries this includes advice on the UK tax residence rules, the remittance basis rules, their UK inheritance tax exposure, domicile and international holding structures. For expats and those leaving the UK, he provides advice on the UK statutory residence test, the requirement for ongoing UK tax returns, double taxation issues, and inheritance tax planning. For those returning to the UK after living or working abroad he ensures their assets are structured efficiently before they return to the UK. Donald implements asset protection, family governance and wealth management solutions for international families. He has a particular focus on holding structures for private capital, principally through the use of trusts, investment partnerships and companies. This includes the use of trusts in commercial contexts, such as employee benefit trusts.
Donald graduated in mathematics from the University of Edinburgh and then read law at Glasgow University. He is a regular speaker at tax planning conferences and writes for professional journals. Donald is a regular contributor to expatmoneychannel and is on the judging panel for the Professional Adviser International Fund and Product Awards.
