Traineeships
Like all leading firms, we select our trainees very carefully. We have extremely high standards. All trainees must have the essential people skills that are required in a practice that is focused on providing joined-up advice to wealthy individuals, families and charities.
Successful recruits will also have a Scottish Law Degree at upper second or above or an accelerated ordinary LLB following an upper second or above in their first degree. We sponsor our trainees’ PEAT1 fees and expect them to pass at the first sitting.
Our traineeships are structured over two years and cover four six-month seats in various areas of the firm. All trainees spend time in our largest departments – Tax and Succession and Land and Property as well as time in our other departments: Charities, Employment and Dispute Resolution, Divorce and Family and Family and Private Businesses. Training is mostly based in our Edinburgh office with some opportunities to work in Glasgow.
Our trainees benefit from a structured mentoring programme and each have their own mentor assigned to them. They are expected to take a high degree of personal responsibility for their career from the start. On-the-job training is complemented by regular internal seminars, continuing professional development and Partner-led quarterly reviews. It is a continuous two-way process with regular feedback and communication.
Of course, it is not all work and no play. Turcan Connell is a friendly place with a strong social life which includes numerous sports activities, our Christmas and birthday parties and our annual summer barbecue which are organised by our Social Committee. Our Colleague Engagement Group (CEG) meets regularly and canvasses ideas from across the firm on how we can continue to make improvements for all.
We are also keen to support colleagues in their engagement with the charity sector. Our commitment can be seen through fundraising activity both by individuals and the firm as a whole, and through encouragement given to our team to volunteer as charity trustees of local and national charities.
We choose a charity partner to work with on either a one year or two year cycle and we have raised more than £70,000 for local and national charities over the past five years.
Applications for our 2026 traineeships are now closed.

Summer internships
We offer a select number of summer internships to students who have an interest in our fields of expertise. Internships are normally aimed at third year honours students or those studying the accelerated LLB at a Scottish university.
Our internships provide real, hands-on work experience with a chance to develop skills in a fast-paced and friendly environment. The six-week programme normally runs between late June and early August. Following a firm-wide induction, interns are allocated to specific departments.
Internships are an increasingly important part of our recruitment strategy and many interns go on to become trainees with the firm. Each intern is individually mentored and all are guaranteed an interview if they decide to apply for a traineeship.
Applications for our 2025 Summer Internships will open on 1st November 2024.
