Turcan Connell re-elect leadership and secure strategic lateral hires to cement firm’s unique position in Scottish private client market

On election as Chairman of Turcan Connell in 2019, Alexander Garden alongside Managing Partner Gillian Crandles, committed to “guiding the firm by its core values in an empathetic and progressive manner” and to deliver excellent client service”.

Fast forward five years and the recently re-elected leadership duo have remained dedicated to that goal, successfully steering the firm past a pandemic, embedding a refresh of their brand and most recently securing a string of strategic lateral hires across their key service areas including Land & Property, Family Business and Tax advisory services.

With the push towards a more sustainable and regenerative model for the rural sector, the Land & Property team at Turcan Connell is expertly placed to assist clients on diversification as well as the legislative changes which are on the horizon. The return of rural property partner Murray Soutar and arrival of renewables specialists Lesley Roarty and Ian Riach as legal directors play a key role in continuing to grow the firm’s rural expertise. Murray brings with him considerable experience in advising clients investing in Scotland, particularly in the purchase and sale of rural properties. Lesley and Ian’s established experience in advising clients on all matters relating to the renewable energy sector will be invaluable to clients who operate in this area. The recruitment of Yvonne Byrne in the firm’s Glasgow office as an established commercial property advisor also demonstrates the firms growing ability to support the commercial aspects of private individuals and their businesses.

As a firm which prides itself on safeguarding and facilitating the succession to generational wealth, Turcan Connell is delighted to have secured the strategic appointments of specialist Director, Katy Burke as a tax advisor to advise on family investment companies and trusts along with inter-generational planning for business and rural families, and most recently, Kirsty Ross in family business to counsel family business interests through times of change and succession. These appointments bolster the firm’s capabilities in tax advisory, succession planning and family governance for owner-managed businesses and high net worth individuals, all as part of their strategic plan to be able to deliver holistic advice as needed.

Gillian and Alexander work together closely to ensure Turcan Connell is uniquely positioned as the most reputable firm in Scotland to exclusively look after the full range of legal and tax planning needs of private individuals, families and their business interests, as well as a wide range of charities. As the firm continues to grow its talent across both its Glasgow and Edinburgh offices to meet increasing demand, the leadership team remains focused on delivering robust tax, business and legal advice through the dedication and discretion of trusted and technically astute advisors.

The firm particularly prides itself on consistently developing and retaining talented individuals and the re-election of Alexander and Gillian to serve a second term as Chairman and Managing Partner is indicative of the high regard in which they are held by partners, colleagues and clients in industry.
