By Matthew Pleass, Summer Intern
I’ve just finished the fourth week of my internship at Turcan Connell in the Land & Property team and the time has flown by! Everyone has been extremely welcoming and it has been a great opportunity to add to my legal experience.
Everyone has been very helpful and happy to explain the purpose of the form I am filling in (and how to fill it in) or how to draft letters or deeds correctly. I was immediately given work to do by my team, which was a great way to get to know everyone and meant there hasn’t been a dull moment while at the firm.
I’ve particularly enjoyed being in the Land & Property team because it is the subject I have been most interested in while at university. It has been great to see the practical application of the concepts which I have been taught at university. Going forward, it will be extremely useful to me in my studies to have seen the concepts I have been taught about at university operating in practice.
I have been surprised and pleased with the incredibly varied work I have been given, ranging from making land register applications to putting in offers on flats to researching the obligations of the owners of rivers. Although challenging, the variety and amount of work I have been given has been really exciting.
Turcan Connell, as well as offering interesting work, presents numerous opportunities to socialise with the people in the firm. I’ve really enjoyed taking part in the summer hockey tournament which is currently taking place against other law firms. It’s been a great way to meet people and relax and I was relieved to discover that no previous hockey experience was required. I also attended the annual Turcan Connell summer barbeque, which was a great opportunity to meet people from different teams in the firm, along with some of last year’s summer interns.
Overall, I have been very pleased with both the amount of experience I have been getting at Turcan Connell and the friendly atmosphere in the office. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself and I am looking forward to the work I will be doing in the next few weeks.
