We have all thoroughly enjoyed the varied, exciting work which we have had the opportunity to do during our internship here at Turcan Connell (TC), but have been amazed by the range of social activity available to us, despite only being here for six weeks.
On the first day of our internship, the trainees invited us out to lunch, and later in week took us out for welcome drinks. This gave us a real insight into what life at Turcan Connell is like and it showed us that there is a great balance between work and social life. It also gave us the chance to quiz the trainees on life at TC, to calm our fears about the traineeship application and to get answers to our numerous questions about the traineeship itself. We were also taken out to lunch with our own teams. This allowed us to get to know the trainees, solicitors, associates and partners in our teams outside of the office environment - something which none of us were expecting from the internship. We were all made to feel like valuable and integrated members of the team right from the start.
There has also been a variety of sporting activity open to the interns. We were invited to play in the TC netball team with the Law Society. It is open to all skill levels, from those who are very much beginners to those with years of experience. All the team have been very welcoming to those of us who went along and made us feel really comfortable. It is great fun and a good run around after a long Monday at work!
We were additionally given the chance to play hockey for team TC. Our first match was a "friendly" – TC v Turcan Connell Asset Management – although we're not sure you could call it that! It did, however, end in a draw so both sides were kept happy. We have also played against Pinsent Mason, Tods Murray and Morton Fraser. Even after four games, the interns have really settled in to their roles – albeit cheerleading or scoring goals – and we will be sad to leave such a great team with incredible spirit. Even if we didn't win all our matches we definitely had the most enthusiasm! By getting involved, we've really started to feel like part of the bigger team here at Turcan Connell.
However, the highlight of our social calendar as interns was the much anticipated annual summer barbeque. This year, the theme of the evening was in honour of the 2014 Games in Glasgow. We took part in the 'Turcan Connellwealth Games' which included hilarious challenges like the classic egg and spoon race and an inflatable assault course! Aside from it being a lot of fun, we had the chance to meet so many other people from TC in a social environment. It was so encouraging to see how much time and effort the Social Committee had put into this event to ensure that we all had a good time, demonstrating to us just how important social life is at TC. It was a fantastic night with great food and great company, and we even (surprisingly) had the weather on our side!
We would all highly recommend the summer internship to anyone keen on pursuing a career in law. The work is exciting and challenging, the atmosphere in the firm is friendly, kind and encouraging at all times, and there is a real focus on socialising together as a firm. It has certainly proved to us that an internship at TC is not all work and no play!
