Ian specialises in asset protection advice for high net worth individuals and their families, including entrepreneurs, business professionals and land owners. His expertise includes inheritance tax and capital gains tax planning, succession planning and protection of assets. Trusts are an important aspect of many of these arrangements, and Ian advises both on the use of UK and non-resident trusts and trust structures.
Ian speaks regularly at specialised tax and trust conferences. He is a member of STEP (Society of Tax and Estate Practitioners) and an associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Ian is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in both Trust Law and Private Client Tax Law. Chambers UK Guide describes Ian as "extremely bright" and "a wizard on the use of trusts".
Ian joined Dundas & Wilson in 1986, becoming a partner there in 1990. In August 1997 he became a founding partner of Turcan Connell and became Managing Partner in April 2012. After seven years as Managing Partner, Ian stepped down in April 2019, succeeded by Gillian Crandles.
