Registers of Scotland recently launched a new online platform for Scotland’s register of landlords.

The system provides a service for landlords and anyone managing rental property on their behalf to apply, manage and renew their own landlord registration in one place.

Legal requirements for landlords and agents

Private landlords are required to apply for registration with their local authority under Part 8 of the Antisocial Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Act 2004. Operating as an unregistered landlord is a criminal offence which may be subject to a penalty on conviction of up to £50,000 and a ban on letting properties of up to five years.

If you own or manage a property you are required to renew your application every three years, and to inform the local authority of any changes to the information you have provided through the Scottish Landlord Register.

Registers of Scotland continue to make improvements to the beta site based on user feedback.
