By Connor Barnes, Summer Intern
Having completed the process of applying online and undergoing an interview, it was finally time for my first ever experience in a law firm to take place. Although a little anxious at first, I was instantly put at ease upon arrival. The friendliness portrayed at my interview was reflected in every individual I met on the first day and throughout the whole week.
The first couple of days went quickly as we were introduced to all areas of the firm and given a real insight into the great work that takes place in each department, as well as a couple of lessons in how to work the computers! After all the introductions had taken place, we were shown to our teams for the next six weeks. I was delighted to be placed within Land & Property having grown up in a rural background.
The work started straight away and I was made to really feel part of my team, not just because of how welcoming and approachable everyone was, but because the duties I was assigned made me feel like a really valuable member. From research tasks concerning actual clients to drafting cover letters, no two pieces of work have been the same.
Everyone has been extremely helpful in answering any questions, however obvious they are; I’ve been guaranteed that there are no silly questions but I’m not so sure! Having only studied property law at university it has been great to see the plethora of different tasks that are undertaken in practice and it has really given me an insight that will be invaluable in my further studies at university.
My first five days at Turcan Connell have absolutely flown by and I can’t wait to see what the next five weeks entail. I’m looking forward to taking part in more social events (especially the summer BBQ!), having already had welcome drinks and lunch with the trainees, as well as getting to know not only the other interns but as many people within the firm as I possibly can.
