By Our 2017 Summer Interns
Over the past six weeks the summer interns have met up most lunchtimes; using the time as an opportunity to share our experiences of life at Turcan Connell, while we work our way round Tollcross’ many sandwich bars and coffee shops. With our internships drawing to their close, today’s discussion was a real reflection on our time at the firm.
Needless to say, we’ve learnt an incredible amount, and as we head back to our respective universities, equipped with extra knowledge, skills and insight, we wanted to share a few words of wisdom with the students who are considering interning next summer.
Calum: “Be positive and make the most of the opportunities that come your way. You’ll enjoy a variety of work and experiences, and there is much to be gained from it all with the right mind-set.”
Hannah: “If you don’t know, ask and if you still don’t know…ask again!”
Ellen: “Be confident in your work and assertive when you are asked to report back on what you have done. Always trust that you have done your best and everyone will see that.”
Katie: “Get involved! Try to experience as much as you can while you’re on your placement, whether that’s joining the firm hockey team, going to Business Bites or helping out with the Court Run. It will help you to meet lots of different people and really experience life at TC. ”
Sean: “Don’t be afraid to show your personality, especially in the application process.”
Emma: “To cite the great Hermione Granger – ‘when in doubt, go to the library.’ TC has its own mini library, filled with essential reads for any aspiring private client lawyer.”
Ailsa: “Keep a note of the work you do as it happens, because when you get to week six you might not remember all the things you learnt in week one.”
Brynhild: “Don’t be intimidated! You will be given tasks that you don’t know how to do, but you’ll quickly learn that there are a lot of things you can teach yourself. Start by making an attempt, and if that doesn’t work you can always ask.”
