When the staff of Turcan Connell selected our Charity of the Year, we made a commitment not only to fundraise on behalf of The Yard (SC002538) to raise vital funds to allow it to continue the excellent services it provides for young people with disabilities and their families, but to give our time and other ‘skills’ (the tentative use of the word skills will be explained!)
Beginning with The Yard’s Summer Fun Day on Saturday 13th August, it opened its doors to its members for a day filled with fun and games. Linda Thomson, the Business Change & Office Services Manager here at Turcan Connell, and her daughter spent the day keeping the children and adults fed and watered by running the café and helping with the BBQ. My fiancé helped out on reception for the afternoon, welcoming visitors and helping the lovely receptionist Katrina keep things in order. I volunteered with Elizabeth in the face painting tent. Requests came in fast; ‘Can I have a Pikachu? Can you draw a Squirtle?’ After my 3rd Pokémon request, I saw a pattern emerging and realised that my face painting ‘skills’ required improvement!
It is not often you get a chance to see first-hand the benefit provided by the charity you are fundraising for; volunteering at the Summer Fun Day did just that.
The volunteering continued into the next week with three teams from Turcan Connell going down to the Adventure Centre to help out with some essential maintenance. We put on our working clothes and trainers and headed down to Eyre Place Lane, ready to be put to work!
The first team, headed by Partner Alix Francis, started the work by painting the perimeter fence and then recovered seats – putting into action some serious upholstering skills. Hannah Starritt, solicitor, took the next team down and painted the fence around the famous bed swing. They couldn’t resist testing it out! I took the last team down and due to the rain, we were mainly indoors. We painted some of the internal walls with a fresh coat of paint and cleaned the tables and chairs.
Everyone who volunteered during the last week agreed that not only was it fun to help out and do something different, but that it was such a positive experience to be invited in by The Yard and to work with them.
We are looking forward to the next volunteering project!
