By Kirsty McLeish, Summer Intern

It’s week six and I can’t quite believe it. The thought of starting a summer internship at Turcan Connell for a six week duration was an intimidating prospect, however, I can safely say that the experience has been amazing and I am so glad I was lucky enough to be included.

I have spent the duration of my internship in the Land and Property department, within Adam Gillingham and Don MacLeod’s team. Being part of a smaller team within a bigger department has really made me feel part of the firm and the work that they do. This system has allowed me to have the time to understand client issues while observing and getting involved in projects from start to finish. Although other firms may offer placement students the chance to hop around departments on a weekly basis, Turcan Connell has allowed us to truly experience the life of a trainee which is extremely valuable.

During my time in Land and Property, I have been assigned a variety of tasks. The team is always busy which means that the days are packed and exciting. I have drafted emails and letters on behalf of the partners and other members of the team, as well as being tasked with drafting offers, delivering documents, examining title deeds; all real client work. The whole team have been extremely welcoming and are always willing to answer questions. Work has been assigned to me by all members of the team, which adds to the variety and has forced me to learn to prioritise, a skill that will be necessary in trainee life. One of the most surprising parts of the internship has been the amount of Partner contact I have experienced during my time and how willing everyone has been to answer questions and help me out when I have been unsure.

Working a 9.00am to 5.00pm job has proven the importance of a work/life balance and Turcan Connell has provided many social events for us to get involved in. The summer interns have been invited to lunches, Friday drinks and of course the famous BBQ! This has been a great opportunity to meet everyone within the firm – not only those within your team – and of course allowed the interns to quiz the trainees with all our questions!

I have had an amazing six weeks here at Turcan Connell and I would only encourage other students to apply and get involved in the years to come!
