When beginning my internship, I wasn't really sure quite what to expect. Our first day began with a number of presentations and introductions, which settled any nerves that we had and introduced us to the firm and its culture. Following this, we had the opportunity to meet our teams and we were taken on a tour around the office. It was at this point that the friendly and welcoming environment at Turcan Connell became evident. Everyone we spoke to was very approachable and they were all willing to answer any questions that we had.
At the start of the internship, you are assigned a mentor whose role it is to provide guidance and answer any questions. Your mentors will also set up weekly meetings to see how you are getting on and ensure you can manage your workload and the tasks that you are being assigned. I have been working for two different departments during my time with the firm: Land and Property, and Tax and Succession. I believe that I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to experience two different departments and the different work that goes on in each. As a result of this, I have been given a wide variety of work to complete, which has been very beneficial as I am still not sure about what areas of law I want to qualify into.
Throughout the internship I have completed a variety of tasks, from legal research to drafting documents including wills, codicils and trusts. Not only did this expose me to the typical daily tasks of a trainee, but it also allowed me to appreciate the range of skills required as a solicitor. One of the highlights of my internship thus far has been attending client meetings with a Partner. This experience has given me a real insight into the realities of life in a premier private client firm.
Turcan Connell actively encouraged us to interact with all members of the team. This began with a welcome reception on our first week with the current trainees. On the social side of things, there have been weekly sporting events from hockey matches to rounders games, summer interns were also invited to dinner and drinks with their respective departments, as well as Turcan Connell's annual Summer BBQ. These events gave us the opportunity to network and get to know people outside of the office environment.
Personally, the highlight of my internship so far has been the people that I have met at Turcan Connell. In both of my departments, I have met people who are willing to take time with me and answer any questions that I may have. I believe that this approachable environment allows students to excel and learn from those with a wealth of experience and knowledge. It has been an invaluable experience, and I have had the chance to gain a clear insight into what it is like to work as a trainee at Turcan Connell. This is an incredibly useful experience and so I would recommend it to anyone who is considering a career with the firm.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far at Turcan Connell and I have learnt a great deal about the firm, its clients and the services it provides. Everyone that I have spoken to has been very friendly and welcoming and I have been provided with excellent work to complete. I would encourage anyone who is considering a career at Turcan Connell to apply for an internship, as it has been a thoroughly rewarding experience.
