Turcan Connell is delighted to announce successes for several members of our Legal Team, who are continuing their professional development. We would like to congratulate our colleagues by highlighting their achievements and giving you some information on their new qualifications.

Dual Qualification

David Welsh, Solicitor - Qualified Solicitor in England & Wales

The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) exams are for solicitors qualified outside of England & Wales who want to become qualified in that jurisdiction. The exams are set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. David had to sit exams on all areas of law before being assessed on practical matters such as Legal Drafting, Interviewing of Clients, Giving Legal Advice and his ability to present arguments in court. This process was completed over eighteen months and he is now fully qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales, as well as in Scotland. Benefiting Turcan Connell's continued growth within our London office, he is the only dual-qualified assistant in the Tax and Succession Team. This means that David can give more rounded advice to clients with cross-border issues.

The Society of Registered Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) is the worldwide professional association for those advising families across generations. It promotes best practice, professional integrity and education to their members. Members help families plan for their futures: from drafting a will or advising family businesses, to helping international families and protecting vulnerable family members. There are two routes into STEP: either the diploma which consists of four exam papers in Wills & Executries, Trusts, Taxation of Trusts & Estates and Trust & Executry Accounting, or the Qualified Practitioners route whereby each student must submit three thesis papers.

Katy Whiteford, Senior Solicitor, Lindsay McCulloch, Senior Solicitor & Caroline McMillan, Solicitor - STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates (Scotland)

Both completed their thesis papers between June 2013 and June 2014 and were admitted to full membership of the Society, as Registered Trust and Estate Practitioners, in November 2014.

Paul Macaulay, Senior Associate - STEP Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising

This course is one of STEP's recent additions to its certificates for advanced practitioners. The course itself consisted of a two day workshop in London followed by an end-of-course assessment, focusing on analysing the needs and complexities of family enterprises, including governance issues and potential sources of conflict, plus the business opportunities for practitioners in advising on succession and other business changes. The course was mainly attended by representatives from private banks and family offices around Europe who have developed sophisticated family business offerings. Paul completed the course in September 2014, passing with Distinction.
