Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism told business leaders in Belfast that Scottish Independence would bring new opportunities to the rest of the UK and Ireland.
Speaking at the annual British-Irish Chamber of Commerce conference, Mr Ewing pointed to existing Irish-Scottish collaboration on energy to establish an offshore electricity network and cross-border work to build on offshore renewable energy potential."In an independent Scotland our closest relationships will be with our nearest neighbours and this will lead to new opportunities for Ireland, Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK in terms of trade and investment" he said. "One area where we already have a clear and thriving partnership is under the ISLES project. The cross border collaboration which is supported under the current European Union INTERREG IVA programme, can help Northern Ireland, Ireland and Scotland deliver our huge off-shore renewable energy potential including wind, wave and tidal."
