Agricultural Holdings Legislation

The Scottish Government announced a few weeks ago that they have the intention of carrying out a further review of current Agricultural Holdings legislation. Somewhat to the surprise and the consternation of many involved in the agricultural sector, Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead announced at the Royal Highland Show on Thursday (and reconfirmed at Lloyds TSB Question Time the next day) that the issue of absolute right to buy (ruled out in 2008 and no longer being considered by the Land Reform Group) would be included within that review.

Many view this announcement as simply prolonging the uncertainty facing those involved in letting agricultural land and as extremely unhelpful to all concerned. Angus McCall, former Chairman of Scottish Tenant Farmers Association (STFA) was taken by surprise at this announcement, declaring"this could blow [the STFA] apart".
