Chris Sheldon, Partner (R) and Kirsty Bell, Solicitor (L) with last year's candidates
Now in its 6th year, Turcan Connell’s Business Mentors event brings together business owners and leaders from a range of disciplines with undergraduate ‘candidates’ from Scottish Universities who are looking to enhance their employability in management and leadership roles.
The event incorporates one-to-one, pair and panel mock interviews for all candidates with individual constructive feedback sessions from the mentors. There are also presentations, group discussions and workshops on CV writing, interviews and recruitment and selection techniques. Candidates supply updated CVs and notes on career aspirations in advance of the event to assist the CV coach and the mentors during interviews.
The event closes with a networking drinks reception to allow the candidates to meet the mentors informally and to hear about their career paths and businesses. The mentors and workshop hosts volunteer their time and there is no charge to the candidates, but spaces are limited.
From the Candidates:
Thank you for putting on such a helpful event for us last night. I feel I got exactly out of it what you are hoping to achieve for us; constructive feedback, contacts and a real confidence boost. I'm really very grateful for the opportunity.
Amy, studying Chinese and Spanish at the University of Edinburgh
Thanks again for having us for the evening last night, it was really valuable and enjoyable and I really appreciate the opportunity to be involved.
Jamie, studying Business Management with Enterprise at Heriot Watt University
From the Mentors:
It was a fabulous opportunity for the students to practice interview techniques. They all seemed to get a lot out of it. It is always fantastic to be able to give something back to help people young people achieve their personal best.
It seemed like the students really got a lot out of it and I certainly picked up a few learning points myself! I would be very happy to be involved in future.
