Fundraising at The Yard
The weekend of the 16th September saw the firm participate in two hugely successful fundraising events to raise money for The Yard.
Volunteering at The Yard
When the staff of Turcan Connell selected our Charity of the Year, we made a commitment not only to fundraise on behalf of The Yard (SC002538) to raise vital funds to allow it to continue the excellent services it provides for young people with disabilities and their families, but to give our time and other ‘skills’ (the tentative use of the word skills will be explained!).
This year Turcan Connell has chosen to support The Yard as our Charity of the Year.
The Yard is a purpose built indoor and outdoor adventure play facility for children and young people with disabilities and provides a lifeline for many disabled children and their families. Find out more about the charity here.
Turcan Connell is involved in a number of fundraising activities:
A group from our Land & Property team recently took part in a volunteering weekend at Mersehead Reserve, Dumfriesshire with RSPB. We assisted the RSPB Assistant Warden and a full time volunteer with their work on the habitat of the Natterjack Toad population at Mersehead by clearing willow tree saplings from the toads’ winter habitat. Following the reintroduction of Natterjack toads to the area a few years ago, their population is continuing to increase and it is hoped that by clearing a channel between the population at Mersehead and the one round the headland at Southwick, the gene pool of the toads will be widened and the future of the toads in Scotland will look more promising. The group found the work rewarding and we were even lucky enough to meet two of these notoriously elusive Natterjack toads to round off our efforts nicely!
On Sunday 9th September, five of our Turcan Connell employees took part in the Great Scottish Run half marathon, in aid of the Rebecca Dykes Foundation. The team raised an incredible £5,388 for the charity.
The weekend of 24th-26th March 2017, Jon Robertson, Partner and Head of Land and Property; Louise Johnston, Partner; Lyndsay McGregor, Senior Solicitor; Linda Thompson, Office Services Manager, and her husband Dougie, took part in a day of scrub clearing at RSPB’s Insh Marshes Reserve, near Kingussie. The weekend involved chopping up willow and burning it in order to create a clear marshland for the wading birds.
Janette Howard, one of our legal secretaries at Turcan Connell, organised a food collection in the office for the Edinburgh SW Foodbank.
Heather Burnett, Solicitor in our Land and Property team, attended an RSPB Scotland Friends of the Capercaillie event at the Abernethy National Nature Reserve.
Turcan Connell’s Glasgow Team took part in a pub quiz organised by French Duncan at the beginning of June in aid of the Brightest Star charity. The questions were tough and, on a few occasions, the team opted to purchase answers from the quiz master. Despite our best efforts, we did not rank in the top three, however we had a great time, learnt about a very worthwhile cause and got the chance to test our knowledge of subjects ranging from Scottish History to hip hop Moghuls. It was a well organised event and we managed to raise over £3,300 for the Brightest Star.
On the weekend of 1st-3rd April 2016, a team of volunteers from Turcan Connell took part in an RSPB Working Weekend. They spent the weekend at RSPB’s Glenborrodale Reserve on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula working with the Site Manager, Simon Mclaughlin, and various RSPB land agents to remove rhododendrons so as to help preserve native plant and tree specimens. The weekend was a rewarding experience for all involved as we managed to clear rhododendrons from 110,350 sq ft of the reserve. It is hoped that this work will help maintain the renowned biodiversity at Glenborrodale for future generations to enjoy.
Donnchadh Galvin, Company Secretary at Turcan Connell recently took part in the Tough Mudder Race raising funds for the Make a Wish Foundation.
Anna Watson, Solicitor in the Divorce and Family Law team at Turcan Connell talks about Law Society Scotland's mentoring scheme.
