Sarah Miller

Intro
Hi, I'm Sarah Miller and I'm a first year trainee here at Turcan Connell. I'm currently working in the trust and tax department, having spent the first six months of my traineeship in land and property. These are the two largest areas of the firm and you can expect to spend at least six months in each department.

Why did you choose Turcan Connell?
I decided to apply to Turcan Connell, having done some research online. I looked at the Legal 500 and Chambers websites and Turcan Connell stood out as a firm which was the leader in its field in many of the areas of law which I was interested in.

In terms of the application process, I remember it as being relatively straightforward and stress-free - there were certainly no obscure questions on the application form.

Applicants are invited to interview on the recruitment day held by the firm which gives you the opportunity to chat to other law students who are in the same position as you. This definitely helps with the nerves. On the day, we were interviewed by a partner and given a tour of the offices here at Princes Exchange. This was followed by a lunch with the current trainees, which allowed us to find out more about the firm and what life is like as a trainee. In the evening the firm organised a drinks reception which gave us the opportunity to speak to partners and other solicitors. All in all, I felt that the recruitment day gave me an extremely valuable insight into life at Turcan Connell.

What aspects of your traineeship do you particularly enjoy?
At Turcan Connell , I feel part of the team and I'm given my own workload to manage. Another benefit of doing your traineeship at Turcan Connell is the large number of trainees who are based at the office here in Edinburgh. This provides an instant support network of friends, who are all in the same position as you. The social side of things is also an important consideration when it comes to your traineeship. Turcan Connell has an active social committee who organise Christmas parties, summer BBQs and social events to enable you to catch up with colleagues outside of work.

What do you hope to get out of your traineeship?
A traineeship with Turcan Connell allows you to work in up to four different private client departments and alongside lawyers who are specialists in their field. I'm looking forward to building on my client care skills, something which is fundamental to the firm, and improving my knowledge of private client work.
