Heather deals primarily with tax and estate planning for individuals, trusts and family businesses. She advises on the use of onshore and offshore trusts for asset protection, succession planning, and as part of tax-efficient structures.
She also advises family businesses on tax planning for disposals and succession, and advises private clients on the tax aspects of land transactions, heritage property and maintenance funds.
Heather also deals with charity law including the establishment of charitable trusts and companies, and VAT for charities.
After graduating in law from Cambridge University, Heather trained with Berwin Leighton (now Berwin Leighton Paisner) in London and went on to work as an assistant solicitor. She joined W & J Burness in 1987, and became a partner 1992. She joined Turcan Connell in December 1997.
She is qualified as a solicitor in Scotland and in England and Wales, is a member of the Law Society of Scotland's Trust Law Committee, and is a member of STEP. She is also a regular speaker at professional conferences on tax and trust planning.
