Malcolm deals principally with clients who have an interest in Scottish land. He specialises in agricultural matters, acting for both landlords and tenants. He advises on land law in its broadest sense - covering all aspects of agricultural and rural property, including land and estate transactions, agricultural tenancies, farming partnerships and the commercial exploitation of rural land.
An accredited Agricultural Law specialist, Malcolm has been Convenor of the Law Society of Scotland's Rural Affairs Sub Committee since 1990. He has also been Secretary to the Scottish Agricultural Arbiters' Association since 1998, is Convenor of the Legal and Parliamentary Committee of the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association, and is a Convenor of the Legal & Fiscal Policy Group. He is also a member of a number of farming enterprises.Malcolm has frequently lectured on agricultural and estate matters at specialist rural affairs courses promoted by a number of bodies. These lectures have covered a wide range of topics - from the constitution of agricultural leases to sheep stock valuations and milk and livestock quotas.
Chambers UK Guide describes Malcolm as having “an academic, encyclopaedic knowledge of agriculture” and that he is “very much at the top of his tree.”
He attended Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities before joining W&J Burness as a partner in 1973. He was part of the W&J Burness private client department that joined Turcan Connell in 1997.
