Simon specialises in tax and estate planning for private clients and in charity law. He is head of Turcan Connell's charity unit and was a member of the Scottish Charity Law Review Commission (the McFadden Commission).
His expertise covers capital taxation, succession, trust law and asset protection with both UK and international dimensions. An important feature of his work is succession to family businesses, whether incorporated, partnerships or landed estates. He is also expert in international aspects of trust taxation and practice.Simon speaks regularly at specialist conferences both in the UK and abroad, and is a member of STEP. He is a past convenor of the Law Society of Scotland’s Tax Law Committee. He is also a member of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, and of the Charity Law Association.
Chambers UK 2008 describes Simon as a “leading light” and says he has “enormous empathy for the voluntary sector and knows what it needs”. Clients laud his ability to combine “deep knowledge with a customer-friendly manner; he is a great lawyer with a sharp business mind”. He is credited with a lead role in the formulation of charity law in Scotland.
After reading law at Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities, Simon trained with W&J Burness where he became a partner in 1985. He was one of their private client partners who joined Turcan Connell in December 1997.
He has served on the board of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, is currently a non-executive director of Macphie of Glenbervie, and is a member of the Court of Directors of the Edinburgh Academy.
