Independence White Paper

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

999Over the course of the weekend, the First Minister announced that the Scottish Government’s White Paper on Scottish Independence will be published on Tuesday 26th November 2013.

It is hoped that the White Paper will be the first step in the next chapter of the debate surrounding the referendum and Scottish Independence.  It should include more detail of the Scottish Government’s view of an independent Scotland but, importantly, it should include facts and figures of what the economy of that newly independent country would look like.

If the White Paper contains the detail that we are hoping for, it should stimulate much more public debate on the way in which Scottish residents will be affected by their decision next September.

The First Minister has stated publicly that the referendum will be won and lost on issues of personal finance.  This is something that we have been saying for some time now and we welcome the forthcoming public debate.

In particular, we hope to see clarity on matter such as which currency would be used in an independent Scotland, whether the existing taxation system would be

adopted in whole or with changes, what will happen with personal pensions and will

there be a bank deposit guarantee scheme which matches the one currently in place.

Whether or not any or all of these issues are dealt with in the White Paper will become clear in November.
