Turcan Connell works only with private clients, charities and landowners. The firm advises on Tax and Trusts, Land and Property, Charities, Employment Law, Family Law, Litigation and Asset Management. Trainees will have the opportunity to work within a variety of these areas, moving every six months.
Turcan Connell currently has 21 Partners, 2 Principals and around 300 staff.
Turcan Connell recruits up to 11 trainees each year. From October 2011 we will have 22 trainees.
During your traineeship you will have 4 seats, each lasting 6 months.
Trainees do have an input into seat allocation and if trainees have an interest in a specific area we will try to give them a seat in that department. Our largest departments are Land and Property and Tax and Trust and all trainees will undertake a seat in both of these areas.
Turcan Connell recruits up to 10 summer interns each year. Our summer intern programme runs for 6 weeks and interns will be allocated to one area, usually within Land and Property or Tax and Trust as these are our largest departments.
At the moment Turcan Connell does not have trainee placements or summer internships within our Guernsey or London Offices.
We encourage you to take responsibility, including client contact and ownership of your own workload from the outset in conjunction with the relevant Client Care Partner. The amount of client contact does depend on the seat you are in. Generally your mentor/Partner will try to involve you as much as possible.
Since Turcan Connell is a private client firm, there is a strong emphasis on the importance of building and maintaining relationships with clients. Therefore, trainees will be expected to regularly attend client meetings.
Any offer of traineeship is subject to you obtaining a minimum upper second class law degree or successfully passing your accelerated law degree. We also require you to complete the Diploma in Legal Practice at first sitting
We only recruit trainees and summer interns who are undertaking a Scottish Law Degree.
If you have undertaken the two year accelerated LLB the timetable for applications is slightly different for you. You should aim to apply for a summer internship and training contract towards the end of your first year unless you plan to take time out.
There is no such thing as a typical day; however, Turcan Connell strives to give employees a challenging and rewarding work environment. To hear more about life at Turcan Connell first hand from our trainees please view our podcasts www.turcanconnell.com/podcasts
All trainees and summer interns will be allocated a mentor who will offer guidance and support through their time at Turcan Connell.
We offer a variety of regular internal seminars as well as seminars specifically aimed at trainees.
Trainees will also have quarterly reviews with their Partner/mentor. The reviews are an opportunity for you to discuss what you are doing well and identify any areas for improvement or further training. Turcan Connell encourages you to take responsibility for your career from the start and the quarterly reviews are an important part of your continuing professional development.
Summer interns receive a full induction to our business and our programme is structured to give you maximum involvement and experience.
The majority of applications we receive are from 3rd year law students as well as those studying the accelerated LLB, however, we do accept applications from 2nd year students.
If you are successful in securing a summer internship at Turcan Connell and you then decide to apply for a traineeship with us, you will be guaranteed an interview.
Do not be discouraged from applying for a traineeship if your application for summer internship is unsuccessful.
No, our assesment day is held approximately 2 weeks after the closing date.
